Each year, cadets across the country stand vigil at their local cenotaph, in memory of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in the name of Canada. It serves as a reminder to cadets and our community the deep gratitude we feel for the sacrifices made by our veterans. The cold, snow, rain or wind is nothing compared to the harsh conditions endured by those who served to defend us.
This year, 21 is reviving this tradition that has been lost at our corps over the years. We will be posting cadets for one hour shifts through out the night starting at 20:00hrs (8:00pm) November 10th ending at the commencement of the regular services on November 11. Cadets will stand for at least a 30-minute shift, which may be extended depending on how things go. This will take place at the Hespeler Cenotaph located at Queen Street and Tannery Street.
Each cadet will use a drill purpose (non functional) Lee Enfield .303 Rifle, march into position, present arms and assume ‘rest on your arms reversed’ position for the duration of the shift. While standing vigil, cadets are encouraged to contemplate the meaning of Remembrance Day to them and to their community. Cadets will receive training on how to correctly participate.
We would ask that parents drive cadets to the cenotaph and arrange to have them picked up when their shift is over. We are also working on having drivers available (similar to tagging drivers) should the need arise.
Thanks to the gracious support of our Sponsoring Legion 272 and the Hespler Historical Center we will have access to the old town hall for the duration of the event for warm-up, bathroom and resting between shifts. Snacks and warm beverages will be provided.
There will be at least 2 uniformed staff members supervising the event. Parents are encouraged to stay at the venue for the duration.

Please be aware that the form will automatically remove spots from the pool as cadets select them so, if your desired time isn’t available please make a note at the bottom of the page and we will work to meet your needs – this is also where parents can indicate there availability/desire to assist.
We know it’s going to be challenging and it will be a long night for all of us. We all believe it is that important, and I thank you for your support.
